Sonam Kapoor is once again the first well-known figure in India to voice an opinion on politics. She posted a ‘horrible’ picture of the turmoil in Bangladesh on Instagram on Monday. Protests and violence broke out in Bangladesh last month in response to demands by student organizations to remove a contentious quota system for government jobs.
Sonam’s message to Bangladeshi’s
Sonam reposted a post on Instagram from The Juggernaut, describing how 66 people had perished in the fighting in just one day. “This is quite awful. Together, let’s pray for the people of Bangladesh, “Sonam wrote. There are now one hundred people dead.
What’s happening in Bangladesh?
In a wave of violence that swept across the 170 million-person nation on Sunday, police used tear gas and rubber bullets to scatter tens of thousands of protestors, leaving at least 91 dead and hundreds injured. A nationwide curfew was enforced beginning Sunday night, rail services were suspended, and the nation’s massive apparel industry closed.
Protests turned into a drive to remove Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who was elected in January to a fourth consecutive term despite the opposition’s boycott.
The number of people killed on Sunday—at least 13 police officers among them—was more than the 67 people recorded on July 19, the day when students protested against quotas. It was also the highest number of deaths from any protest in recent memory in Bangladesh.
