Mumbai: August begins on a promising note for Hindi cinema at the box office as Ajay Devgn’s comedy collides with Siddhant Chaturvedi-Triptii Dimri’s love saga this weekend.
Dhadak 2 is Karan Johar’s production is completely different from the first film. Not only is the story in Dhadak 2 deeper, but the new pairing of Tripti Dimri and Siddhant Chaturvedi brings a different freshness. The film touches upon issues like wounds of love, complexities in relationships and class divide in a very subtle way. Famous film critic, Taran Adarsh called the movie Dhadak 2 “Sharp writing… Captivating, emotionally-charged second half… Solid performances… #Dhadak2 works for the most part… But the love story lacks the soul-stirring soundtrack that elevated the first part”.
Industry insiders say Son of Sardaar 2 is poised for a rather low ₹7-crore opening on Friday. If word of mouth can lift the film, it may go up to ₹8 crore or beyond, but a double-digit opening looks unlikely for the comedy. That is a rather disappointing start, considering the first Son of Sardaar had opened at ₹10.7 crore, and that too back in 2012.
Dhadak 2 may be getting good ratings from critics and appreciation for its performance, but Ajay Devgn’s mass appeal is still far ahead in drawing the audience to the theatres. This is what the advance booking is indicating. More than 28,000 tickets of Son of Sardar 2 have been sold so far. Whereas, only 18,000 tickets of Dhadak 2 have been booked.
