Mumbai, India – After a three-year hiatus from the big screen, superstar Aamir Khan’s much-anticipated film, Sitaare Zameen Par, is set to hit theatres this Friday, June 20. Touted as a “spiritual sequel” to his critically acclaimed 2007 classic Taare Zameen Par, expectations for the film were considerably high, especially given the lukewarm reception of his last two ventures, Thugs of Hindostan and Laal Singh Chaddha.
However, the advance booking figures for Sitaare Zameen Par paint a less than stellar picture so far. The ticket sales, which only opened late Tuesday night due to reported delays in certification from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), have been sluggish. As of Thursday morning, merely 24 hours before its release, the film had crossed just ₹1 crore in advance booking gross for its opening day.
This figure is notably low for an Aamir Khan film, whose projects typically generate significant pre-release buzz and robust advance sales. For comparison, Laal Singh Chaddha, despite its eventual box office struggles, had raked in ₹5.52 crore in advance bookings. Unless there’s an unprecedented surge in ticket sales on Thursday, Sitaare Zameen Par appears unlikely to match its predecessor’s pre-release numbers.

The film, an official remake of the 2018 Spanish film Campeones, reportedly follows a hot-headed basketball coach, played by Khan, who is suspended and assigned to train a team of players with intellectual disabilities as part of his community service. While Taare Zameen Par explored themes of learning disabilities with emotional depth, Aamir Khan has indicated that Sitaare Zameen Par will be a more comedic take, aiming to evoke laughter while still celebrating differences.
