Mumbai: Aamir Khan’s much-anticipated return to the silver screen with Sitaare Zameen Par, co-starring Genelia Deshmukh, has reportedly secured a respectable start at the box office on its opening day, Friday, June 20. Early trade estimates suggest the film garnered between ₹9.5 to ₹11.5 crores across India.
Industry insiders indicate a nett trade figure in the range of ₹9.5 to ₹10.5 crore, while producer estimates are slightly higher, placing the opening day collection between ₹10.5 to ₹11.5 crore. This marks a decent, though not spectacular, comeback for the superstar after a three-year hiatus, particularly following the lukewarm performances of his last two films, Thugs of Hindostan and Laal Singh Chaddha.
Sitaare Zameen Par, touted as a “spiritual sequel” to Khan’s beloved 2007 classic Taare Zameen Par, opened to a mixed but generally positive critical reception. Many reviewers have praised the film’s heartwarming message and the performances of its ensemble cast, particularly the young actors portraying individuals with intellectual disabilities. The film’s emotional depth and engaging narrative seem to have resonated with a significant portion of the audience.
However, despite the positive buzz, the opening day figures for Sitaare Zameen Par fall short of Khan’s previous film, Laal Singh Chaddha, which had a Day 1 collection of ₹11.7 crore. Nevertheless, given the initial sluggishness in advance bookings, the actual opening numbers are seen as a positive sign. The film’s performance over the crucial first weekend will now be a key indicator of its overall box office trajectory, with strong word-of-mouth expected to play a significant role in its sustained run.
