Dismissing the plea by Babu Rayji Shah, who claims to be the adopted son of Gangubai Kathiawadi, the SC issued an order in favour of Sanjay Leela Bhansali.The movie will release as scheduled, the SC ruled.
The apex court upheld Bombay HC order that Mr Shah, claiming to be the prodigy of the real Gangubhai flagged the film defamatory. The order came as Shah, failed to establish his relation with the real Gangubhai.
At the hearing today, Bhansali’s lawyer also told the top court that a name change at this stage was not possible, which was suggested by the bench in its hearing on Wednesday. The lawyer for Bhansali Productions, Siddhartha Dave, argued that the name change was impractical given that film releases tomorrow and has been publicized with its current title.
Humbug litigations were faced by the movie for its title which included the name of the sex worker turned politician in asia’s largest red light area Kamathipura in Mumbai.Allegations over the use of the name of the lady, and location surfaced. Apart from Shah, Maharashtra MLA Amin Patel and Kamathipura resident Shraddha Surve raised objection ahead of the release.
