The anticipated Punjabi movie Sardaarji 3, released by Diljit Dosanjh, has recently disrupted the course of the film by criticising the casting and launch of the movie. The trailer that had Diljit romancing Pakistani actor Hania Aamir faced the social media users of India, especially after the terror attack in Pahalgam on 22 April 2025. Although Dosanjh had made it clear that the movie was filmed in February in the UK, long before the attack at a nightclub where no political ban was being observed, most fans were disappointed, and producers have decided to bypass the theatrical release of the movie in India.
In an open interview, caught off-guard, the producer of the film Gunbir Singh Sidhu talked about the trolling and the commercial consequences of not releasing the film in India. “He told me that after the attack, we, as a company, chose not to release the film in India, because we did not intend to offend the feelings of anyone. Sidhu has affirmed that there was no government order during the filming, which made the team decide to be safe, due to the sensitivities that ensued later.
Given the controversy, he also said something about social media posts by Hania Aamir and Mahira Khan criticising India and its Operation Sindoor. “In my opinion, such statements are not supposed to be made. Hania was under the belt. I do not want to say anything more, however,” he said.
Sidhu explained that the lack of an Indian launch has cost a lot, as far as money is concerned. When viewing it against the success of his other film, Jatt and Juliet 3, which had earnings of 100 crores worldwide (40 per cent being Indian), he estimated that Sardaarji 3 has lost out on close to 40 per cent of its potential earnings that it could have bagged by catering to the Indian market.
The new episode in the popular fantasy-comedy Sardaarji trilogy, Sardaarji 3, was released in the cinemas worldwide on June 27. Diljit Dosanjh appears in the film as a strange ghostbuster with Neeru Bajwa and Hania Aamir playing main roles.
