Santhy Balachandran, actor and co-writer of the film Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra, who also contributed the extra screenplay and did dramaturgy work on the Kalyani Priyadarshan-Naslen film, recently went to social media to pay tribute to the women who made the film happen. Santhy wrote a moving letter with behind-the-scenes photos and emphasised the priceless value of the work of female crew members and performers, noting the talent, commitment, and energy they contributed to the set every day.
Some of the most important contributors listed in the post were the camera associate, assistant director, hairstylist, production associate, colourist, audio team members, costume designer, associate action choreographer, and actors like Durga C Vinod, Jeiya and Shivakamy Shyamaprasad. Santhy also gave special praise to Kalyani Priyadarshan, who acted as the titular Chandra, saying how the actress took the role and committed fully to it, and acted with genuine authenticity. One of the images they shared was accompanied by the words: “The girl who embraced Chandra with all of her heart, she wrote. As the women were praised on set, Santhy also recognised the supportive men, the director being Dominic Arun, in creating a good working environment that was constructive, co-operative and safe.
The note is timely as Chapter 1: Chandra of the Lokah franchise was still playing incredibly well at the box office. The fantasy film produced by Dulquer Salmaan Wayfarer Films has become the runaway winner of the Onam season, out-competing other films such as the movie Hridayapoorvam starring Mohanlal and Sathyan Anthikad. Being considered as one of the rare female-centric superhero movies in Malayalam cinema, Lokah is making a splash not only in terms of its genre placement but also in terms of the way it is received by the audience.
The film has been acclaimed by audiences and critics alike due to its epic scale, fantasy storyline and good acting, especially by Kalyani in the main lead. The tribute to Santhy not only focuses on the work behind the scenes but also acknowledges the increasing visibility and recognition of the role of women in Malayalam cinema.
