Mumbai: Gone are the days when entertainment just meant Bollywood. ‘Param Sundari’ dominated the weekend’s new releases with its high-profile soundtrack and star cast, two Malayalam films quietly made a significant impact at the box office. The releases of ‘Hridayapoorvam’ and ‘Lokah: Chapter 1 – Chandra’ have brought fresh excitement to the Mollywood industry, with one emerging as a surprise critical and commercial hit.

After opening at 2.7 crore, Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra, witnessed a jump of almost 38.8% on day 2. As per the early trends, on Friday, August 29, the superhero film managed to earn in the range of 3.7 – 3.8 crore. The movie, bankrolled by Dulquer Salmaan’s Wayfarer Films, is a cinematic treat and could even be a lesson for many on how to master the superhero genre. Lokah is another feather in the cap for the film’s director and writer, Dominic Arun, who regaled audiences with the black comedy drama Tharangam in 2017.

Meanwhile, estimates reveal that  Param Sundari collected Rs 7.25 crore on Day 1. For a romantic comedy and a non-holiday release, this is a fair opening, though far from blockbuster territory. The film recorded an overall Hindi occupancy of 12.92 per cent on Friday, with footfalls increasing steadily throughout the day.

In comparison, Rajinikanth’s Coolie stormed the box office when it released on August 15. Despite clashing with Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR’s War 2, it recorded an opening day collection of Rs 65 crore in India across all languages. Globally, the film raked in a staggering Rs 151 crore on Day 1, making it the biggest Tamil opener of all time.
