MUMBAI: Anurag Basu’s highly awaited “Metro. In Dino,” a spiritual successor to his 2007 cult classic “Life In A Metro,” has opened to a pretty muted response at the Indian box office on Friday, July 4th. In spite of a galaxy-class cast including Aditya Roy Kapur, Sara Ali Khan, Ali Fazal, Fatima Sana Shaikh, Neena Gupta, Anupam Kher, Pankaj Tripathi, and Konkona Sen Sharma, the movie could rake in an estimated ₹3.35 – ₹3.50 crore net on the opening day.
These numbers, as good a beginning as any for a non-action, dialogue-driven ensemble movie, are clearly not the sort of number one usually looks for in a film touted to be a sequel to a popular and critically acclaimed predecessor. “Life In A Metro”, although it opened with a modest ₹80 lakh, went on to become a sleeper hit later, establishing the strength of word-of-mouth.

According to early estimates, “Metro… In Dino” saw a relatively slow start with morning and afternoon shows but picked up momentum significantly during the evening and night screenings, particularly in metro cities. Cities like Bengaluru, Mumbai, and the National Capital Region (NCR) showed higher occupancy rates, suggesting that the film is resonating more with urban audiences drawn to slice-of-life narratives.
The movie, interweaving several poignant stories of today’s couples dealing with the intricacies of love and relationships within the urban backdrop of fast-paced metropolises, has been welcomed by critics with mostly positive reviews, with its emotional intensity, robust performances, and soulful score by Pritam. Yet, it has to contend with the release of Hollywood movies such as “Jurassic World: Rebirth” and continuously running domestic films.
The real test for “Metro. In Dino” will be how it performs over the fateful weekend. As word-of-mouth picks up, the makers of the movie will be looking for a big boost in collections on Saturday and Sunday to have a better base at the box office and make it commercially viable.
