Sreenivasan, a longtime Malayalam actor, screenwriter, and director, died on Saturday morning, December 20, bringing to a close one of the most powerful creative paths of Malayalam movie screen. He was 68. At around 8.30 am, Sreenivasan breathed his last having faced difficulties in breathing when he was taken to a private hospital to undergo dialysis. He was taken to Tripunithura Taluk Hospital where he was proclaimed dead by doctors. His wife, Vimala Sreenivasan, is by his side at his deathbed.
The mortal remains will be later stored at Ernakulam Town Hall between 1 pm to 3 pm on Saturday to enable the people, fans and representatives of the film fraternity to say their goodbyes. His funeral will take place on Sunday, December 21, 10 am at his residence in Kandanadu with official honours.
Sreenivasan made a very unique mark in Malayalam movies due to his wit, daring satire, and biting social commentary. His prose continuously criticized hypocrisy, political hypocrisy and social hypocrisy and tended to tell painful truths in a way that was humorous and understandable. The most prominent feature of his work was that he managed to make the brutal reality captivating, readable, and close to the hearts of people of various generations.
Sreenivasan is one of the most prolific scenarists in the industry who authored a number of landmark scripts which have become classics. His characters were remarkably common, rough and quite human, showing the facts of the real life. Bringing his authenticity and comic genius to the screen, as an actor and a director, he managed to draw humour even out of the most miserable circumstances.
Sreenivasan was born on April 4, 1956, in Patiyam village near Koothuparamba, Kannur district, and changed the way popular Malayalam films were made with his radical approach to satire and socially focused films. His life as well, in personal life, was closely intertwined with cinema.
