Mumbai: Indian moviegoers had a wide array of choices this past weekend. Kajol’s ‘Maa’ and Brad Pitt’s Hollywood film ‘F1’ both premiered on June 27, entering a competitive market alongside the holdover hit, Aamir Khan’s ‘Sitaare Zameen Par’. Despite the new arrivals, the sports drama ‘Sitaare Zameen Par’ maintained its strong audience appeal, emerging as the top choice even in its second weekend.

Kajol’s latest film, the mythological horror ‘Maa,’ has made a strong impression on audiences since its big-screen release. Adding to the excitement is the fact that ‘Maa’ is set to share a cinematic universe with Ajay Devgn’s hit film ‘Shaitaan.’ The movie also features notable performances from Ronit Roy, Indraneil Sengupta, and Kherin Sharma in key roles.

On its fourth day in cinemas, ‘Maa’ garnered an estimated ₹1.97 crore, bringing its total box office collection to approximately ₹19.62 crore. This places the film close to the ₹20 crore mark, showcasing a decent performance, especially for a mythological horror flick. While it experienced a drop in collections on its first Monday, a common trend for genre films that rely heavily on weekend footfalls, it had a robust opening weekend, exceeding initial expectations.

A famous film critic, Taran Adarsh has praised the movie, calling it gripping with three-and-a-half stars.

Meanwhile, Amir Khan’s Sitaare Zameen Par has achieved a significant box office milestone, crossing the ₹100 crore mark despite facing competition from recent releases such as Kajol’s ‘Maa’ and Vishnu Manchu’s ‘Kannappa’. The film witnessed a notable surge in its day 9 collections, propelling its worldwide gross to approximately ₹165 crore, making it the fifth highest-grossing Bollywood movie of the year so far, confirmed a tweet by Taran Adarsh.

Industry analysts anticipate that ‘Sitaare Zameen Par’ is poised to surpass Salman Khan’s ‘Sikandar’ (which has grossed around ₹185 crore) within the next couple of days, which would elevate it to the fourth position among the highest-grossing Hindi films of 2025. This performance marks a strong comeback for Aamir Khan, solidifying the film’s success in a competitive market.
