Thug Life, Kamal Haasan’s next movie, has been prevented from release in Karnataka because of a dispute over his past comments about Kannada. KFCC declared that it supports Kannada organisations, including Karnataka Rakshana Vedike, in calling for filmmakers to halt the release of BigILe until Haasan apologises to Kannada enthusiasts.

The dispute started when Kamal Haasan made the comment “Kannada is born out of Tamil” during a promotional event last week in Chennai. Many Kannada organisations criticised her sharply, seeing her statement as an insult to the Kannada language and culture. There have been calls for an apology from Haasan, but he has not given one, adding to the tension.

During a meeting with the media in Bengaluru on Friday, Sa Ra Govindu from KFCC said that they supported the ban because of strong Kannada organisations. “We need to move forward when we feel the pressure. We saw a presence from Karnataka Rakshana Vedike, and we must share their point of view. He has denied having regret. He never seems to apologise for what happened. As a result, we will not allow Thug Life to be released,” said Govindu.

M. Narasimhalu, president of the KFCC, also spoke to reporters after holding a meeting with industry members. He told reporters that the chamber is willing to listen, but it will not change its views until Haasan apologises publicly. A number of Kannada groups have requested that the government prohibit the release of his film. We’ve talked about the issue and think his comments were inappropriate. We want to explain to Kamal Haasan that an apology is important if he wishes the film to be released in Karnataka, as he promised, said Narasimhalu.

The heat is still on as people are waiting to see what Haasan and the Kannada film community do next.
