Indian films seem to be having their moment. Nag Ashwin’s Telugu dystopian sci-fi epic Kalki 2898 AD and Diljit Dosanjh-starrer Punjabi romantic comedy Jatt & Juliet 3 have entered the top 10 weekend performers at the North American box office, as reported.
Kalki 2898 AD, billed as the most expensive Indian film to date, scored the #5 spot and earned $5.4 million in North America’s three-day weekend (Friday to Sunday). After adding the earnings from Wednesday previews and the opening day (Thursday), its total reached $11 million. This means it registered the biggest opening for an Indian film in North America so far. Interestingly, the film’s first footage was unveiled with much fanfare at San Diego Comic-Con last year.
If Telugu is excelling, there is no doubt that Punjabi isn’t far behind. Jagdeep Sidhu’s romantic comedy threequel, Jatt & Juliet 3, starring Punjabi star Diljit Dosanjh and Neeru Bajwa, earned $1.8 million over the three-day weekend (earning the #9 spot). With this, box office collection totaled up to $1.9 million at the North American box office so far.
Sources reveal that Jatt & Juliet saw good footfall in cinema halls on Sunday, June 30, earning Rs 5.50 crore. The film had 67.28 per cent occupancy in Punjab, with significant contributions from various cities. Earlier on Thursday, it started its box office run with Rs 3.5 crores, becoming the second-biggest opener in Punjabi cinema after Gippy Grewal’s ‘Carry on Jatta 3’. The movie was released in 2023 and earned Rs 4.55 crore on its opening day.
Meanwhile, Prabhas-led epic dystopian sci-fi actioner, saw a massive dip. Its domestic box office collections dipped of around 60 per cent on Monday. The latest Prabhas film did exceptionally well in its first weekend at the box office.
Kalki 2989 AD raked in Rs 95.3 crore on its day 1, Rs 59.3 crore on its day 2, Rs 66.2 crore on its day 3, and Rs 88.2 crore on its day 4. With this, the first weekend’s total stood at Rs 309 crore. The film, however, made only around Rs 34.6 crore on its day 5, taking the total collections to Rs 343.6 crore on its first Monday.
