Popular Punjabi comedian and actor Jaswinder Bhalla passed away on Friday morning, leaving behind a trail of mourning fans and admirers. The actor breathed his last at Fortis Hospital in Mohali in the early hours of Friday, leaving behind an indelible legacy for generations. His last rites will take place on Saturday at Balongi.
Bhalla had been unwell for some time and was taking treatment prior to his death. Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann wrote on X, “the sudden departure of Jaswinder Bhalla Ji from this world is extremely sorrowful.. The heart is saddened by the silence of the jingle of Chhankatian. May Waheguru grant him a place at His feet… Chacha Chatra will always reside in our hearts”.
Known for his iconic comedic flair and unforgettable roles in Punjabi cinema, Bhalla leaves behind an enduring legacy in both film and stage.
Jaswinder Bhalla was a versatile talent who seamlessly blended comedy and education. His career took off in 1988 with the satirical series Chhankata, where his character, Chacha Chatar Singh, became a cultural sensation. He went on to star in beloved Punjabi films like Carry On Jatta, Chak De Phatte, and Daddy Cool Munde Fool, earning fans across generations.
Beyond the screen, Bhalla was a dedicated academic. As a professor and Head of the Department of Extension Education at Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), he inspired countless students with his intellectual rigor and creative spirit. He retired in 2020 but remained a cherished figure. The news of his death has deeply affected his former students, many of whom credit him with shaping their lives. Bhalla had once expressed his sorrow at retiring during the pandemic without a proper farewell, a moment he said would stay with him forever.
