Mumbai: Amitabh Bachchan, our beloved Big B, marks his 83rd birthday. One personality and so many names as everyone loves to call, but one personality celebrating multiple birthdays is unheard of.
A day before he turned 83, Amitabh Bachchan’s X post in the early hours of dawn seemed enigmatic. “It took two years to learn to speak; and 80 years to learn to stay silent,” went the entry tagged T 5527.
Over quarter of a century now, Big B has given a smart makeover to his superstardom for the sake of sustenance. From the action hero of the 70mm Bollywood screen who routinely thrived on played-to-gallery formula, he has quietly become the man who spreads knowledge on TV. It was risky but the move clicked, in the process re-hauling reality television glamour for Indian television. When Amitabh Bachchan agreed to host Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC) in 2000, even the most ardent fans were perhaps not so sure. But Big B made it a success we all cherish today.
Why Amitabh Bachchan Celebrates Two Birthdays
Amitabh Bachchan was born on October 11, 1942, in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh. His father, Harivansh Rai Bachchan, was a renowned poet in Hindi literature, while his mother, Teji Bachchan, was active in social work. Big B’s fans also celebrate his birthday on August 2. In fact, people consider this day his “rebirth day,” as it was the day he defeated death.
In 1982, Amitabh Bachchan was shooting for the film “Coolie.” On July 24th, during an action scene in Bangalore, he was accidentally punched by Puneet Issar, leaving him in critical condition. He had to be immediately hospitalized and underwent multiple surgeries.
Doctors declared his condition critical, and at one point, he was declared dead. But on August 2nd, a miracle occurred when Amitabh Bachchan suddenly moved his thumb, after which his health began to improve. During this time, his family and millions of fans prayed for his well-being. Finally, on September 24th, he was discharged from the hospital, and upon his return home, thousands of fans gathered outside to welcome him.
