Friends, the popular sitcom, is celebrating its 30th anniversary on September 22. It’s a bittersweet occasion because of the passing of Matthew Perry, who played the iconic Chandler Bing. Fans and the show’s creators have been deeply affected by Perry’s death, which happened less than a year ago.
The Media reports that executive producer Kevin S. Bright, Marta Kauffman, and David Crane recently spoke about the significance of this anniversary. “It’s a huge loss, and it does make the 30th a little fraught,” Kauffman said quite bluntly. Bright reflected on Perry’s impact, stating, “He made us laugh every day,” as per reports.
Perry’s struggles with addiction were widely recognized, and Bright revealed that in the years preceding his passing, the actor seemed to be headed toward recovery. “He’d been fighting the good fight for so long, and it really did feel like… he had finally found some peace,” Bright remarked.
Kauffman recalled a conversation with Perry just two weeks prior to his death, and she described him as “happy and chipper” and in a positive emotional state. She was shocked by how abruptly he passed away and said, “It seemed so unfair… He had a nice appearance. He quit smoking. Yes, he was sober, according to the media reports.
A “broad underground criminal network” was found to be connected to Perry’s use of ketamine, which ultimately contributed to his premature death, according to an investigation conducted after his death. Five people were then charged in relation to the case after this.
In another interview, Kauffman and Crane discussed their relationship with Perry and mentioned how they had become closer over time, according to reports. At one point, we asked him, “Do you want to stop [being in the show]?” Crane recalled. And he said, quite firmly, “No, this is very important to me.”
Kauffman wishes for audiences to recall Perry not only for his struggles but also for the happiness he gave them. She stated that there are two ways to honor him. The first is to donate to drug treatment facilities and fight the disease. The second is to watch Friends and remember him not as a man who passed away tragically but as a man who was incredibly funny and made everyone happy.”
