MUMBAI: Singer-actor Diljit Dosanjh has found himself at the center of a fresh controversy surrounding his upcoming film Sardaar Ji 3, which features Pakistani actor Hania Aamir. Amidst heightened tensions between India and Pakistan following the recent Pahalgam terrorist attack and “Operation Sindoor,” Dosanjh took to social media to share a cryptic post titled “Censored before release?”

The post, re-shared on his Instagram on Monday, is widely believed to be a reference to his long-delayed film Panjab 95. This historical drama, based on the life of human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra, has faced significant censorship hurdles from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), with reports suggesting over 120 cuts were demanded. Dosanjh’s subtle yet pointed remark comes at a time when he is facing severe backlash for collaborating with Pakistani talent.

BN Tiwari, President of the Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE), has publicly criticized Diljit Dosanjh for working with Hania Aamir on Sardaar Ji 3, demanding a complete ban on all his future projects within India. The FWICE, along with the All Indian Cine Workers Association (AICWA), has called for a “complete boycott” of Dosanjh from the Indian film industry, accusing him of “hurting Indian sentiments” and “disrespecting the sentiments of the nation.”

The controversy underscores the continued strained relations between the two nations, which have historically impacted artistic collaborations. While the makers of Sardaar Ji 3 have reportedly decided against an Indian release, opting for an overseas premiere on June 27, the backlash against Dosanjh continues to escalate. Many netizens and film bodies argue that collaborating with Pakistani artists at such a sensitive juncture, especially after the tragic events in Pahalgam and India’s military response, is unacceptable.

Dosanjh, known for his global appeal, has not directly addressed the controversy surrounding Hania Aamir. However, his “Censored before release?” post suggests a quiet commentary on the challenges faced by artists amidst political sensitivities and censorship concerns. The debate surrounding cross-border artistic collaborations, and the role of artists in times of geopolitical tension, remains a contentious issue in the Indian entertainment landscape.
