Mumbai: In a head-to-head clash at the box office, Rajinikanth’s Coolie has emerged as the clear frontrunner, despite a mixed critical reception and a significant slowdown in collections. The initial momentum that Rajnikant’s Coolie built in its four-day opening weekend has pushed it past the ₹450-crore mark worldwide after nine days.
Meanwhile, the much-anticipated Hrithik Roshan and Jr. NTR starrer War 2 has failed to live up to its sky-high pre-release expectations. Directed by Ayan Mukerji, War 2 has collected Rs 243.85 crore gross in India and an estimated Rs 70.15 crore from overseas, taking its worldwide total to Rs 314 crore (gross). With a reported budget of Rs 400 crore, the film needs a stronger performance to recover costs.
The sequel is struggling under the weight of comparisons to its 2019 predecessor, War, which set a benchmark for action films and remains Hrithik’s top-grossing movie. Industry analysts have pointed to a weak storyline and what they call “genre fatigue” as key reasons for the film’s underperformance.
Meanwhile, Mahavatar Narsimha continued its strong hold at box office despite facing strong competition from War 2 and Coolie. Though its weekday collections dipped slightly in this star battle, but week 2 remains solid and reaffirms that the film will continue its run in days coming ahead.
