Having worked in the Hindi movie industry for almost thirty years, 2025 is a historic year for Akshaye Khanna. The veteran actor has set a box office record rarely seen, with only the second Indian actor after Shah Rukh Khan to have given movies that have earned more than 2000 crore worldwide in a given year.
What is even more incredible about the feat is the fact that Khanna has achieved the figure not as a traditional lead character, but by playing a strong antagonist in two of the yearly blockbusters. The two movies would then proceed to become the highest-grossing Hindi movies of 2025, establishing his box office dominance.
Akshaye initially received a great reception through his role of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb in Laxman Utekar’s historical epic Chhaava, in which Vicky Kaushal was the lead actor. The movie opened in January 2025, and it has become golden in a box office hit, making 809 crore worldwide. It was the top earner of the year in India and was widely and unanimously praised by the critics and the audiences, with Khanna in a reserved and dominating role.
Nevertheless, success did not end there. Another successful performance of Khanna came in the spy thriller Dhurandhar, directed by Aditya Dhar in December, where he took the role of a dreaded gangster, Rehman Dakait. Khanna was one of the largest highlights in the film despite being on the same screen with other high-profile actors such as Ranveer Singh, Sanjay Dutt, R Madhavan, and Arjun Rampal. The film experienced tremendous domestic success that was fuelled by strong word-of-mouth.
Dhurandhar has already gained 1,167 crores across the globe and is projected to increase it by 25 crores till the weekend. In this regard, the overall global revenue of Chhaava and Dhurandhar has surpassed 2001 crore in 2025.
With this, Akshaye Khanna has attained a feat which has seen him overcome various leading contemporary stars, such as Prabhas, Allu Arjun, and Ranbir Kapoor, and thus, 2025 will be a year that is defining in his career.
