Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s film “12th Fail,” starring Vikrant Massey and Medha Shankar, has achieved the remarkable feat of becoming the highest-rated Indian film on IMDb, boasting an impressive rating of 9.2 out of 10. The movie has claimed the top spot on IMDb’s list of the top 250 Indian films, surpassing even some of the highest-grossing Hollywood blockbusters of 2023. Notable films such as Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie,” “Guardians of the Galaxy,” Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer,” and “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” fall behind in ratings.
Adapted from Anurag Pathak’s biography, the Vikrant Massey-starrer narrates the inspiring journey of Manoj Kumar Sharma, who triumphed over poverty to fulfill his dream of becoming an IPS officer.
As “12th Fail” continues to receive acclaim, the real-life hero, Manoj Kumar Sharma, has been in the spotlight. Filmmaker Rohit Shetty, on January 8, shared a photo with the IPS officer on Instagram, hailing him as the ‘real hero’ of the movie. Shetty expressed his admiration for Sharma’s service during the COVID-19 pandemic, emphasizing the film’s inspiring narrative, especially for students and youngsters.
The remaining four movies in IMDb’s list of the top five Indian films of all time include the 1993 animated feature “Ramayana: The Legend of Prince Rama,” Mani Ratnam’s “Nayakan,” Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s “Gol Maal,” and actor R. Madhavan’s directorial debut “Rocketry: The Nambi Effect.”
“12th Fail” achieved the status of a sleeper hit, accumulating over Rs 66 crores worldwide. The film premiered on Disney+ Hotstar on December 29, 2023, garnering attention for its compelling narrative and stellar performances.
The recognition on IMDb solidifies “12th Fail” as not only a commercial success but also a critically acclaimed and culturally impactful film, resonating with audiences globally.
