The voting counting in the BMC elections of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation is under progress and with initial indications the BJP led Mahayuti alliance is fairing well. The civic body was polled on Thursday and registered a voter turnout of 52.94 per cent.
The Mahayuti alliance has clearly been leading in various wards according to early trends whereas the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) is lagging. State Election Commission (SEC) is in the act of announcing the outcomes of all 227 BMC wards, which is a dramatic political event following a long duration of four years.
In addition to the BMC polls, 28 other municipal corporations were also elected in Maharashtra. Findings of these civic organizations are likely to be released later in the day as the tallying continues.
The last BMC elections were conducted in 2017, and, whereas the new polls were planned to take place in 2022, they were postponed on multiple occasions. This was caused by various issues such as COVID-19 pandemic, ward delimiting controversies, and the time-consuming legal actions over Other Backward Classes (OBC) reservation in local body elections.
Pre-vote polls had indicated a massive lead to the BJP-led alliance. The JVC exit poll estimated that Mahayuti would take about 138 seat whereas Shiv Sena (UBT) alliance would win about 59 seats. On the same note, Axis My India predicted BJP alliance to win between 131 and 151 seats and the UBT led alliance will win between 58 and 68 seats.
The SEC has followed a progressive counting process as compared to the 2017 elections when the counting was conducted concomitantly. There are reports of two constituencies having their votes counted simultaneously which will lead to the possible staggered declaration of results.
