The Trinamool Congress candidates are in a dominating position in the by-poll results for six assembly segments in West Bengal. The ongoing tally of votes from the polls initiated at 8 am Saturday points towards fortunes with the ruling party. These bypolls are important political indicators for the TMC as there is growing disillusionment in the state against the RG Kar Medical College incident that has led to statewide protests.
The by-elections were conducted at the Naihati, Haroa, Medinipur, Taldangra, Sitai (SC), and Madarihat (ST) constituencies as the respective MLAs resigned from their assembly seats to take up positions in the Lok Sabha after winning parliamentary seats in the general polls of the year 2024. According to initial trends, the Trinamool is leading in all six constituencies, clearly indicating the party’s supremacy in the state.
In Sitai, which is a Scheduled Caste (SC) reserved assembly seat, TMC candidate Sangita Roy is leading by a big margin of 73,452, leaving her closest rival,l BJP candidate Dipak Kumar Ray, far behind with only 12,959 votes. Likewise, in Madarihat, where TMC’s Jayprakash Toppo is leading by 39,353 votes on the ST reserved seat that the BJP had won in the 2021 assembly polls. In all the polls, he has won votes to the tune of 60,728 against BJP Rahul Lohar, who has 21,375 votes.
This outstanding lead in the previous BJP strongholds of Madarihat tells about the TMC voter pitch and its tendency to find back its previous positions. Such results have been said to arise from the trust that the public holds in the TMC’s capability to govern, even with the spate of controversies rocking the party now and then. With the final results expected soon, the bypoll outcome will add further strength to Trinamool and pose a major hurdle to the BJP regional plan for Tripura.
