Currently, in the Worli Maharashtra Assembly polls, the candidate who is receiving much attention is Milind Deora, coming second by polling 18204 votes after five rounds counted till now, according to the official ECI website. Deora, now with the Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde), is one of the candidates in the 2024 Maharashtra Assembly polls that went for voting on November 20, and the counting of which is going on today, November 23.
Deora resigned from the Congress party in January 2024 before joining the Shiv Sena party in the same year. Popular for his long career in politics, he is currently a Rajya Sabha MP from Maharashtra. Deora has also had important Government of India positions, as the Minister of State for the Communication and Information Technology and Shipping, in the Second term of Manmohan Singh, the Prime Minister.
This election has been very sensitive, with Deora contesting the Shiv Sena’s Aaditya Thackeray, who is the adopted son of the head of the Thackeray-led Shiv Sena group, Uddhav Thackeray. Aaditya triumphed earlier in the Worli Assembly constituency in 2019, which is a citadel of the Uddhav camp. For the 2019-2022 Maharashtra government, he was the Minister of Higher Education, Tourism, and Environment. The name associated with Thackeray pedigree gives Shinde’s candidature enormous importance, making this a seat for both factions of Shiv Sena.
Worli Assembly Constituency is one out of 288 constituencies in Maharashtra and it is a very important constituent in the Mumbai district. It falls under the Mumbai South parliamentary constituency together with Shivadi, Byculla, Malabar Hill, Mumbadevi and Colaba assembly constituencies. Popular as one of the most politically sensitive, the results of the constituency may impact the internal relations within the structure of Maharashtra’s political sphere. Fortunately, Sona’s interesting performance is led by Deora; still, the competition does look hot to turn up the constituency on the other side.
