On Tuesday, Maharashtra Congress chief Nana Patole stated that the party high command will now make the final decision after he expressed his desire to resign the position.

On the grounds of Vidhan Bhavan, Patole told reporters that today will see the selection of the Congress’ group leader in the state assembly.

Party sources had earlier claimed that the senior Congress leader had requested the central leadership to relieve him of the responsibility of the organizational post following the party’s worst-ever defeat in the assembly elections in Maharashtra. Whereas Patole had clarified last week that he had not tendered his resignation and rumors were being spread.

Patole said that Congress’s Maharashtra in-charge will come to the city on Tuesday and select the party’s group leader in the state legislature. He said discussions about the state chief’s post would also take place. Queried whether he has tendered his resignation from the state chief’s post, Patole said, “I have expressed my willingness. The party high command will decide on the same.”

He said that the action demonstrates the goal of the current government to consolidate power and destroy India’s federal system of government. The govt is focused on consolidating power by weakening democratic institutions and processes. In the name of efficiency and resource-saving, they are pushing an agenda that will erode the constitutional rights of citizens,” Patole said. He warned that such measures could severely impact public participation and accountability in governance.

Patole further accused that the government was putting its political agenda ahead of the public’s pressing issues. “The One Nation, One Election idea is not just about simultaneous polls; it is about silencing diverse voices and diminishing the role of states in the democratic setup,” he remarked.

In the recently held assembly elections, the ruling Mahayuti brilliantly retained its power in the state by winning 230 out of 288 assembly seats. The opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi won 46 seats, out of which the Congress could win only 16 seats, thus suffering a crushing defeat.
