Prime Minister Narendra Modi met President Droupadi Murmu at the Rashtrapati Bhavan and tendered his resignation along with his council of ministers on Wednesday, ahead of the oath-taking ceremony of the new Cabinet. He also recommended the dissolution of the 17th Lok Sabha.
The President accepted the resignation and requested PM Narendra Modi and the Council of Ministers to continue till the new Government assumes office.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar was expected to bargain hard and seek more ministerial berths, central funds, early assembly polls, and special status for Bihar as 12 Janata Dal (United) or JD(U) members of Parliament (MP) have become critical to the formation of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) at the Centre.
The BJP’s inability to win a majority on its own means it will depend on the support of allies such as Kumar to form the next government. The NDA is comfortably above the majority mark (272) in the 543-member Lok Sabha. The BJP has fallen short of the halfway mark for the first time since 2014. The Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance won 233 seats.
