New Delhi: The Supreme Court has taken cognizance of seven Fresh Petitions relating to the NEET-UG 2024 examination and clubbed all the fresh petitions along with the existing petitions directed on July 8. One of the petitions invokes the CBI investigation into an alleged paper leak, prompting notices to the Centre and the NTA.
Further, the Supreme Court has issued notices to private parties on the NTA’s proposition to transfer cases from different high courts to the Supreme Court to avoid fragmentation of the legal process. The matter in the remedy has also been scheduled for a hearing on July 8.
A vacation bench comprising Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta accepted the NTA’s submissions that several petitions seeking the cancellation of NEET UG-2024 are still pending in various High Courts. Issuing the notice, the bench has directed the petitions to be taken up for hearing on July 8.
On the same note, the NTA was willing to withdraw three other petitions meant to transfer cases from high courts. These cases related to allegations of awarding grace marks to 1,563 candidates who lost exam time on May 5. To this, the NTA’s counsel said a deal has been reached on the matter, with a plan to disclose to the high courts how it will cancel the compensatory marks for 1,536 students as directed by the Supreme Court on June 13.
There is a stir created regarding NEET-UG, forcing the Centre and NTA to apprise the Supreme Court on Thursday that they have withdrawn the grace marks for 1,563 students. Candidates who have lost chances now have the option to appear again in the exam or lose the extra chances given to them.
The NEET-UG exam took place on May 5 at 4,750 centers, and 24 lakh candidates had their results initially expected on June 14 but declared early on June 4 because of the faster answer sheet processing. It has provoked protests nationwide and cases in the constitutional courts and seven other high courts throughout the country. Most of them were able to secure a greater average passing mark, and a staggering 67 of the candidates scored the maximum possible mark of 720.
