The Punjab government has stepped up its attention on enhancing access to education among the Scheduled Caste (SC) children by reinforcing its flagship scheme, the Post-Matric Scholarship Scheme. The program is managed by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, and it makes the state meet the educational costs of the SC students, in case they are pursuing higher education.
According to the official data, the budgetary allocation of 245 crore was given to the scheme in 2024-25. The state government has so far withdrawn [?]92 crore of this, which is yet another step toward the provision of financial support to eligible students in time. According to the Minister of Social Security, Women and Child Development, Dr. Baljit Kaur, during the last three years, the scheme has benefited over 6.78 lakh students through the scholarship scheme.
The state government has also expanded the academic opportunities by associating 11 top-tier institutions, to which qualified SC students may apply to be enrolled on merit. They are AIIMS Bathinda, the IIT Ropar, NIT Jalandhar, IIM Amritsar, Institute of Hotel Management Gurdaspur, NIPER Mohali, NIT Mohali, ISI Chandigarh, Thapar university patiala, Rajiv Gandhi national university of law patiala, and IISER Mohali.
The Punjab government is also working on the creation of jobs for the youth in parallel with its education programs. Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann pointed out that PSPCL gave out appointment letters to 2,106 youthful candidates at an event conducted in the Government Medical College auditorium in Amritsar. He further stated that 58,962 young people have been able to get government employment under his administration.
Once again confirming his assurance on X, the Chief Minister claimed none of the self-reliant young people in Punjab would be denied employment opportunities during his rule.
The government feels that long-term investment in education as well as jobs will enable boosting the SC community and enhance the socio-economic structure of Punjab.
