For the academic year 2025, the National Testing Agency has officially declared that NEET-UG, which stands for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test, has been scheduled to be held through pen and paper based on OMR. The test will be conducted in one day, that of the shift. This has been arrived at by the National Medical Commission (NMC) through consultations between the education and health ministries. The official word on this change has been announced on the NTA’s website, nta.ac.in.
The notification states: “Accordingly, as per the directions of the NMC, it is for the information of all concerned that NEET UG 2025 will be held in Pen and Paper mode (OMR based test) in Single Day & Single shift only.”
There has been discourse as to whether NEET-UG can be conducted in the CBT (computer-based test) mode in the past. However, the choice remains to maintain the offline format as the decision was made last year with the issue of a paper leak, which leads to further debate on examination malpractices. Since 2019, NTA has been conducting NEET UG on behalf of the NMC as the only aptitude test for admission to the UG medical courses across the country.
NEET UG exam is held to provide about one lakh and eight thousand seats for MBBS admission in the country. Out of these, 56,000 are in government medical colleges, and the remaining 52,000 seats are in private colleges. Further, courses such as Dental, Ayurveda, Unani, and Siddha also require passing through NEET UG scores.
According to the sources, in 2024 NEET UG examination crossed 2.4 lakh candidates and reached a record level. It was scheduled for May 2024, and the results were announced in July 2024. Such a response clearly demonstrates the importance of NEET in Indian medical education as its entry point. Aspirants’ are urged to frequently visit the official NTA Portal for more information and updates about NEET UG 2025.
