Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin on Friday unveiled the State Education Policy (SEP) at the Anna Centenary Library Auditorium in Kotturpuram, positioning it as a clear alternative to the Centre’s National Education Policy (NEP). It is worth mentioning that MK Stalin has been vocal about not adopting the NEP. in such a stiuation, this SEP will bring in more autonomy to the sector.
A 14-member committee headed by retired Justice Murugesan was constituted in 2022 to draft the new policy. The panel submitted its recommendations to the Chief Minister in July last year, and the document has now been formally released. Drafted by a panel led by Justice D. Murugesan, the SEP aims to secure greater educational autonomy for the state. With a focus on AI, science education, English proficiency, and equity, the policy breaks away from NEP norms—at a time when the Centre has withheld ₹2,152 crore in funds under Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan due to Tamil Nadu’s NEP resistance. The agenda is to provide quality education accessible for all with big investments pouring in the state-run institutions.
The committee also proposed to allow students to take admission in undergraduate courses based on the marks obtained in class 11th and 12th. It also pushes back against NEP’s proposal for public exams in Classes 3, 5 and 8, calling it regressive, anti–social justice, and a potential cause for higher dropout rates and commercialisation of education.
