New Delhi: The Arvind Kejriwal-led Samajwadi Party said on Tuesday that Akhilesh Yadav and his party MPs would campaign for the AAP candidates before the February 5 Delhi Assembly elections.

On January 30, Yadav will join AAP leader Kejriwal on a roadshow in Rithala. Iqra Hasan from Kairana and several other MPs from the Uttar Pradesh-based party will also be campaigning for the Aam Aadmi Party. Along with the Congress, the AAP and SP are part of the INDIA bloc. But in Delhi, the SP representatives will only be promoting the AAP, which is running against the Congress and the BJP.

The action indicates the Congress’s increased estrangement from the Indian Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA), which it headed during last year’s Lok Sabha elections. In the general elections last year, the AAP and the Congress, who share four and three of Delhi’s seven Lok Sabha seats, campaigned alongside one another against the BJP. However, they are facing off in the Assembly elections.

Last year, cracks had appeared in the opposition alliance when several parties in it supported the idea mooted by TMC supremo and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to lead the grouping, which is currently led by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge.

Kejriwal did not express his support towards Banerjee but said that India Bloc leaders can take a decision on this issue after discussion.
