The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has launched a scathing and creative attack on former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, with the Yamuna River at the heart of their Delhi Assembly election campaign.

BJP’s New Delhi Assembly constituency candidate, Parvesh Verma, a BJP MLA and a container sharpener, on Saturday also had an ‘experience’ of a boat ride on the riverside Yamuna as a polling agent, which is heavily polluted. The centrepiece of the event was a life-size cut out of Arvind Kejriwal, with his ears bent down in shame and the slogan ‘main fail ho gaya, mujhe vote mat dena; 2025 tak main Yamuna saaf nahi kar paya’ (I am a failure, don’t cast votes and by 2025 I won’t be able to keep the Yamuna clean. And don’t vote for me, I did not clean Yamuna River by 2025).

In a dramatic show of water, Verma dipped the cutout in the river several times, which symbolises Kejriwal’s alleged breach of promise to clean the Yamuna. The moves were part of the BJP’s strategy to put the spotlight on the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)’s unfulfilled promises before elections.

For Delhiites, pollution of the Yamuna River has been a problem for a long, with millions of them being exposed to greater health risks. The river remains highly polluted, as promised repeatedly by the ruling AAP to fix the problem, but it has yet to be fixed, with anger mounting among its voters. BJP has grabbed this opportunity to exaggerate public frustration and portray the AAP government as incompetent.

Other political parties have also reacted to the issue. In a dig at Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Samajwadi party chief Akhilesh Yadav wondered if the UP CM would dare to drink Yamuna water in Mathura. Congress candidate Alka Lamba slammed BJP and AAP for playing politics over the plight of the river and said if the Congress comes to power, it will show results by cleaning the Yamuna.
