MCD Mayor Election: The election of Mayor and Deputy Mayor for the 2025-26 term of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) will be held on 25 April 2025. Due to the departure of many Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) councillors from the party in recent months, the number of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) councillors in the MCD has reached 119.
Both nominated MPs and MLAs in the MCD are eligible to vote in the elections for Mayor and Deputy Mayor. According to a notice issued by the MCD Secretariat on Friday, the general meeting of the MCD will be held on April 25, in which voting will be held for the posts of Mayor and Deputy Mayor at 2:00 pm.
Delhi Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta nominated 14 MLAs to the corporation for the year 2025-26 in March last month. Of these, 11 MLAs are from the Bharatiya Janata Party, while three MLAs are from the Aam Aadmi Party.
BJP has a possible lead in the mayor election: BJP has gained a lead in the corporation’s mayor election. BJP has 117 councillors, while Aam Aadmi Party has 113 councillors. Congress has eight councillors. BJP has 117 councillors along with 11 MLAs and seven Lok Sabha MPs, totalling 135 votes. Whereas, Aam Aadmi Party has 113 councillors, three MLAs and three Rajya Sabha MPs, totalling 119 votes.
Possibility of formation of permanent committee: With the return of BJP to the corporation, it is becoming clear that the way can be paved for the formation of the most influential permanent committee of the corporation in more than two years. Out of this 18-member permanent committee, six members are elected by the House of the corporation, while the remaining 12 members are selected from the ward committee.
