Jiribam: A tribal woman was reported to have been shot and burnt alive in a militant attack on a Hmar tribal in the Jiribam district of Manipur, local CSOs said on Friday.
The deceased woman was a 38-year-old woman, Zosangkim, a mother of three who was attacked in the Zairon village, which is about 7 kilometres from Jiribam town. The local civil society organizations claimed her body after the incident, and police said several people exchanged gunfire during the incident, and several houses were burnt. Nevertheless, the authorities have not yet recovered her body as local outfits shifted it.
The Indigenous Tribal Advocacy Committee (ITAC) of Pherzawl and Jiribam called the act a heinous crime and blamed the Meitei radical group Arambai Tenggol for the attempted rape. The militants, he said, attacked around 9 p.m., burnt houses and killed the victim, Zosangkim, during the rampage by the militants. Zosangkim’s husband was a rubber plantation while she was a housewife at the time of the interview.
A Jiribam-based senior government officer, on condition of anonymity, said that about ten houses were set ablaze in the operation. Security forces and forensic experts are on the ground to investigate the scene in the village which hosts about 500 Hmar people.
For now, no more violence has occurred, and the authorities are still collecting details. The case has brought along fear and anger within the locals.
