When the consignment came to police radar at the border between India and Nepal, a 22-year-old woman was nabbed with a huge amount of MDMA drugs, estimated at more than 10.23 crore, in Uttarakhand. The Uttarakhand police arrested the accused Isha of Banbasa, based on a tip-off, near the Sharda Canal in the Champawat district, the Superintendent of Police (SP) Ajay Ganpati.
According to the police, there was a patrol around that area when officers saw the woman trying to escape with a black backpack. After being stopped and searched, they found two packets with 5.688 kg methylenedioxymethylamphetamine (MDMA), a synthetic drug characterized by strong stimulant and hallucinogenic effects.
After her arrest, a case has been registered against her under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. In her interrogation, Isha alleged that the drugs were received by her husband, Rahul Kumar, and Kunal Kohli, his confederate. She also indicated that she was intending to dump the drugs in the canal out of fear of being caught, as the police had stepped up their anti-drug campaign in the area.
SP Ganpati has reaffirmed that there is already work in progress of locating and arresting both Rahul Kumar and Kunal Kohli, who are presently wanted in the case.
The Inspector General of Police (Kumaon Region), Riddhim Agarwal, has rewarded the police team with 20,000 rupees as a gesture of appreciation for their efficient and quick response.
This massive drug seizure is being hailed as a big success of Uttarakhand police as they continue to fight a war on narcotics trafficking, particularly in vulnerable border territories, which drug dealers tend to use most of the time.
