Three first-year students at the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Silchar were reported missing on Saturday after allegedly falling into a waterfall at Harangajao village in Dima Hasao district of Assam. Police stated that the unfortunate incident occurred around 2 pm, and a local rescue operation was quickly launched, which included the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF).
According to neighbourhood residents, a group of some students from NIT Silchar visited Boulsol waterfall where it is a popular scenic spot, which is about 55 km away from the college to enjoy the weekend. Witnesses further alleged that one girl student slipped into the waterfall while the other two attempted to save her and lost control, both were washed away by the strong river current.
Police and rescue teams immediately rushed to the location after having received information. “Our team is on the site and SDRF teams are arriving from Haflong and Silchar,” stated Farukh Ahmed, Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime) Dima Hasao district. The search was continuing at the time of reporting late evening, but the students were still not found.
Officials from NIT Silchar have confirmed that the three students who are missing are in their first year of engineering courses. The Dean of Students’ Welfare, S. S. Dhar, confirmed to the Hindustan Times that a team from the institute has been sent to the scene of the incident. “We are in communication with the local administration and rescue teams. We will be able to confirm the identity of the students once we receive the official account,” the Dean said.
The Barak Valley and Dima Hasao areas are known for their mountains, greenery and beautiful waterfalls, and attract a large number of students and tourists. Officials also mentioned that beautiful landforms pose a danger particular to the post-monsoon season. Incidents have occurred in the recent past, as two Assam University students were killed in the Cachar district after they fell into a waterfall.
