Thoothukudi: In an incident, a newly married couple, from Tamil Nadu faced a horrifying fate just three days after their wedding. It is alleged that the bride’s family in Thoothukudi district was responsible for this outcome. The police are currently investigating the case. No arrests have been made so far.
The victims have been identified as M Karthika (20) and V Murugesan (24). They chose to defy the wishes of the bride’s family and eloped in order to get married. It is worth mentioning that both the bride and groom belonged to the Thevar community ruling out any caste-related motives. During the investigation, it was revealed that the bride’s father strongly disapproved of their relationship and insisted on a six-month waiting period before getting married.
Karthika and Murugesan had been in a relationship for over two years, and on October 30th, they decided to elope, which likely triggered this attack against them. Their marriage was officially registered at a women’s police station in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu.
The tragic turn of events unfolded on a fated Thursday when the bride’s father, accompanied by five others, forcefully entered the groom’s residence, in the district and ruthlessly attacked them with sickles. Both victims lost their lives instantly. The commotion caught the attention of neighbors, who promptly alerted the police.
After the crime occurred, authorities gathered samples from the scene. Sent them to the science lab for analysis. Additionally, trained sniffer dogs were enlisted to help investigate and assess the area where the crime took place.
Following a post-mortem examination, the bodies were cremated in the presence of the groom’s family members. This solemn event took place under heavy police protection, underscoring the sensitivity and seriousness of the case.
The heart-wrenching tragedy serves as a grim reminder of the deeply entrenched societal issues surrounding love marriages and inter-caste relationships in some parts of India, where individuals who choose to marry against family wishes often face severe opposition, and in some unfortunate instances, violence.
