Ahmedabad: A man named Vasilii Kolesnikov, who’s a Russian national, was apprehended by the Cyber Crime Branch of Ahmedabad Police on Friday. He is alleged to have been involved in creating documents, like Aadhaar cards and e-visas. Prior to his arrest, Vasilii, who works as an engineer, had been living in Goa. It was discovered that he originally came to India on a tourist visa but had overstayed illegally since January 2020, when his visa expired.
During an investigation related to a case registered in Surat under the Drugs and Substances (NDPS) Act, law enforcement authorities traced Vasilii to Manali in Himachal Pradesh. Notably, a package registered under his name was seized as part of the investigation. It was found to contain cannabis. The Cyber Crime Branch released a statement revealing that the accused used identities while residing in various locations across India. Additionally, the police found an Aadhaar card and a fake e-visa which raised suspicions of his involvement in illicit activities or conspiracies.
Consequently, Vasilii was taken into custody by the Cyber Crime Branch, and a new case was filed against him for using documents according to the Indian Penal Code and Information Technology Act.
Moreover, the authorities are currently conducting an investigation to determine if he had any involvement, in the distribution of banned items, in regions of the country. They are putting in the effort to uncover any connections he may have had with illegal drug-related activities.
