Raipur: Cybercriminals in Raipur, the capital, have once again committed a major fraud by feigning “digital arrest.” Posing as Mumbai ATS officers, the accused held a Tikrapara resident RTO agent and his entire family under digital arrest via video call for 24 hours and obtained the transfer of ₹17.15 lakh (1.715 million rupees). Based on the victim’s complaint, police have registered a fraud case against unidentified suspects and launched an investigation.
According to reports, RTO agent Sharad Kumar Tiwari received a call from an unknown number. The caller, claiming to be an officer from the Mumbai ATS, claimed that his Aadhaar and bank account had been used in a serious crime such as money laundering. He was instructed to remain on a video call to avoid arrest and cooperate with the investigation.
The accused threatened the victim, threatening to arrest him if he did not cooperate. He and his family were then placed under 24-hour digital surveillance. During this time, they obtained bank account information and transferred a total of ₹1715,000 in multiple installments.
The cyber criminals also engaged family members in video calls to exert psychological pressure. They warned them not to call anyone or leave the house. The family was completely terrified by the constant surveillance and threats, and they continued to comply with the accused’s instructions.
Realizing he had been duped, Sharad Kumar Tiwari filed a complaint at the Tikrapara police station. Police have registered a case against unknown suspects under sections of the fraud and IT Act and have launched an investigation. The accused are being searched based on bank accounts and call details.
The police have appealed to citizens to be wary of any unidentified caller claiming to be an officer of the police, CBI, ATS, or any other central agency. No investigative agency conducts “digital arrests” or requests bank account information via phone or video call. Immediately report any suspicious calls to the cyber helpline 1930 or the nearest police station.
