Pune police arrested a man in an Intelligence operation for allegedly cheating the two by promising them jobs in the Indian Army but not being eligible under the age limit.
Mohit Dhami, a resident of Uttarakhand, was arrested on Wednesday. Police say Dhami claimed to work for Army Command Hospital in Pune when he was befriending his victims.
A 23-year-old man from Dhule, Maharashtra, had lodged a complaint saying that Dhami had promised him and another person to help them secure Army jobs even though they were above the recruitment age limit. In March 2024, the complainant and his companion went to Pune to take a staff selection exam when they met Dhami.
Police officials said Dhami introduced himself as an employee of Army Command Hospital and promised to help them get recruited, even though they were too old due to the age restrictions. In fact, Dhami initially demanded each of them for ₹5,000 as a processing fee. But in the years that followed, money was demanded more, and they had to shell out ₹4.8 lakh to him.
When the two men realized that they had been conned, they went to Pune police, leading Dhami’s arrest. The cops have booked him under the relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and are carrying out a detail probe into the case.
Police are now probing Dhami as to whether he had similarly defrauded other people, and they are appealing for any potential victims who have come too late or remain hidden to come forward. Particularly in the tradition of the Indian army, the case issues a worrying warning against fraudulent job scams aimed at aspirants craving a job in the armed forces.
