The Delhi government has initiated an investigation into the demise of a 12-year-old Class 6 student at a government school in Shastri Nagar, North Delhi, following an alleged assault by senior students. The incident occurred on January 20, with the boy passing away nine days later. A police official disclosed that a post-mortem examination was conducted on Tuesday, and the report is awaited.
A panel of three doctors, appointed by the Delhi government upon the police’s request, carried out the autopsy. Legal action will be determined based on the post-mortem findings. The family, in a verbal complaint, accused senior students of assaulting the boy and raised concerns about medical negligence by a private doctor in treating him.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) Manoj Kumar Meena stated, “We have asked them to lodge a written complaint with us. The autopsy on the boy’s body was conducted on Tuesday, and the report is awaited. Further legal action would be taken accordingly.”
In response, the Delhi government issued a statement on Tuesday, confirming an inquiry by a committee into the incident. The school’s head has been directed to submit a formal report, and the committee is expected to provide its findings within two days.
The government expressed condolences to the grieving family and clarified that the alleged incident occurred outside the school premises. The statement highlighted the proactive measures taken by the Delhi government, including counseling for students to foster a positive state of mind and prevent potential unforeseen incidents. The government emphasized its commitment to a thorough investigation to uncover the circumstances surrounding the tragedy and ensure appropriate action is taken.
