Gambling was at its climax on the Diwali eve in Mungeli district. Gamblers had pitched huge tents and made separate makeshift tables (phads) under the pretext of celebration to play cards. Their celebrations were, however, interrupted when the police, with a tip-off raid massively raided the place and eventually apprehended 236 gamblers.

SDOP Kaushalya Sahu, who was in charge of the operation, was informed on Monday evening that there was a lot of gambling in progress in the brick kiln of Vinod Sahu, on the Mungeli-Nawagarh Road. Police teams moved fast and encircled the area, raiding 22 individual gambling establishments under the tents. The police officers confiscated almost 2 lakh cash, and various sets of playing cards, cell phones, motorcycles that were used by the gamblers.

The police reports state that approximately 51,000 rupees were confiscated right on the gambling tables, and another 1,43,548 rupees were detected in the hands of the players. The total amount of the seizure was 1,94,988 rupees, and other valuables. All the accused were also detained by the police, and they are investigating whether the operation was a larger organised gambling network.

The area locals said that these gambling activities are usually held in secrecy, especially on Diwali evenings, and participants arrive at the area to gamble with their own villages. The partying ambience and the presence of huge crowds facilitate the smooth running of illegal gambling joints. But this time it happened that the action taken by the police immediately made sure that the illegal activity was prevented before it could run out of control.

Governments have declared that they will deal firmly with every person involved. Diwali night raid is one of the largest anti-gambling activities in the area this year, and it demonstrates the concern of the police to ensure law and order in festive occasions.
