The West Bengal Police on Sunday announced the arrest of three suspects in connection with the alleged gang-rape of a 23-year-old second-year MBBS student in Durgapur. The incident occurred on Friday night outside her private medical college campus.

A four-member team from the National Commission for Women (NCW) met the student at the hospital on Saturday, and also sought a detailed Action Taken Report (ATR) from West Bengal authorities within five days.

The student, who hails from Odisha, had reportedly stepped out with a male friend to get food when she was allegedly accosted and assaulted by a group of men in a secluded area near the college gate. Her friend is also reportedly being questioned by the police as part of the ongoing investigation, as the victim’s parents have expressed suspicion regarding his role in the sequence of events.

Victim’s Mother Recounts The Horror

She further said that the the three men dragged her daughter to a nearby forest area by taking advantage of her being alone. “Two more people joined them. One of them committed the crime and snatched her mobile. She was threatened that she would be killed if she dared to shout,” the survivor’s mother said.

The incident has triggered widespread outrage and protests from students and political parties, drawing comparisons to a previous assault case involving a junior doctor in Kolkata. The National Commission for Women (NCW) has also taken suo motu cognizance of the matter, demanding a prompt and transparent investigation, and the Odisha Chief Minister urged his West Bengal counterpart to take exemplary action against the perpetrators. The West Bengal Police have assured that the culprits will not go unpunished.
