New Delhi: A person is accused of duping over 16.32 lakh rupees by hacking the Central Indirect Tax and Customs and the ICEGATE (Indian Customs Electronic Gateway) portal of the Customs Duty Board. According to the victim, Mukesh Kumar Kaira, the perpetrators misused his user ID and password, engaging in fraudulent activities. Mukesh Kumar Kaira, residing in Crossing Republic’s Jaypuria Apartments, alleges that his complaint pertains to the misuse of his user ID and password for the National Indirect Tax and Customs and the hacking of the ICEGATE portal.

ICEGATE is a national portal for Indian Customs Duty that electronically facilitates services like e-filing for businesses, cargo carriers, and other commercial stakeholders. Mukesh Kumar Kaira claims that his registration and issuance of class-three digital signatures and registration key with ICEGATE were applied for on May 18, 2023. He received his ICEGATE number via email on July 19, 2023.

Kaira alleges that ICEGATE issued the ICEGATE number on an ID that was not his. He brought this discrepancy to the attention of the ICEGATE registration department through email. Subsequently, he was instructed to apply for deactivation.

This incident highlights the vulnerability of national portals to cyber threats and identity misuse. The victim’s proactive approach in reporting the issue demonstrates the need for stringent cybersecurity measures to safeguard sensitive information on such platforms. The authorities must investigate and address the reported fraudulent activities to ensure the integrity and security of electronic gateways.
