Nagpur: At least two people died, and three, including two in critical condition, were injured in a violent rampage at Nagpur Railway Station by a mentally ill man late on Monday morning. The attacker attacked a group of six to seven men who were asleep on platform number 6, using a concrete sleeper slab—a piece of railway iron— to hit them. This killing instantly sparked havoc at the station since it was a very brutal act.
When the lady started screaming, a group of police officers from the Government Railway Police (GRP) who were on patrol for the night were able to subdue the attacker. However, they acted promptly, which, unfortunately, could not save two people’s lives. Friends of the deceased have confirmed that one of the deceased has been named as 40-year-old Ganesh Kumar from Tamil Nadu. The other victim, a man who was homeless, had not yet been named. On the other side, the three injured persons are in the hospital receiving treatment; of the three, two are in critical condition.
The 45-year-old mentally challenged man who carried out the attack tried to escape but was promptly arrested by the police. There is a murder case filed against him, and an investigation is going on to know whether the cause of the attack was planned or not. The event caused uproar in the area, and people expressed their insecurity at the station.
Following this incident, security in and around Nagpur Railway Station has been upgraded in a bid to avoid future attacks. The GRP and local police are now working hand in hand to make sure that such an incident never happens again. Passengers using the station are warned to keep an eye on their surroundings and report any incidents to the police. The event has also provoked people to call for increased health awareness and measures to ensure that persons with such tendencies do not go out in public spaces and cause havoc.
