In a major anti-illegal drug deal, the Central Bureau of Narcotics (CBN) has held a man hailing from Lucknow and has captured more than 5,300 bottles of counterfeit cough syrup, the officials announced on Friday. With special intelligence, CBN officers went on a raid operation on Thursday, to a residential premise where they discovered a huge quantity of falsified medicine.
Deputy Narcotics Commissioner Praveen Bali reported that the raid resulted in the seizure of 5,353 bottles of counterfeited cough syrup falsely marked to look like products of big pharmaceutical firms. What was of substantial concern with the operation was that these were banned and extremely addictive sedative drugs, such as NRx-medicine Alprazolam and Clonazepam, added in the syrup alongside other drugs.
The Bali added that in a special modus, the syrup was chemically compounded and re-labeled to look like cough syrup made of Codeine. The accused had applied labels falsely printed with a well-known brand pharma to deceive both the consumers and police of his motives.
It was verified by the officials that the person who owned the illegal stock had no legal documents or license to produce, store, or sell those substances. According to the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985 of the entire consignment was confiscated.
The suspect in custody is being held as the investigation continues to find out the larger network that was involved in the illegal posting and even smuggling of the forged medication. Authorities believe that the fake syrup was to be distributed massively, which could have posed a danger to the health of the people, and especially those who are oblivious to its use.
The CBN has insisted on attacking drug crimes vigorously and protecting the community against detrimental and uncontrolled pharmaceutical items. This is evidence of how drug rackets are becoming sophisticated, and there is an urgent need to have more monitoring of the pharmaceutical supply chain.
