MUMBAI: In a significant development in the high-profile murder case of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Baba Siddique, Zeeshan Akhtar, an alleged key conspirator, has been “arrested” in Canada. This crucial breakthrough was announced by Maharashtra Minister of State for Home, Yogesh Kadam, on Wednesday.

“Zeeshan, who was involved in the Baba Siddique murder case, has been arrested in Canada. We have initiated the process to bring him back to India. We will interrogate him further (after bringing him back),” Minister Kadam told the media, underscoring the determination of Indian authorities to pursue all individuals linked to the shocking assassination.

Baba Siddique, a former Maharashtra minister and a prominent political figure known for his annual Iftar parties attended by Bollywood celebrities, was tragically shot dead in the Bandra area of Mumbai on October 12, 2024. The daylight murder had sent shockwaves across the political and social landscape of Mumbai and beyond.

Sources indicate that Zeeshan Akhtar, aged 22, was apprehended in Canada in connection with a fake passport case, which provided the crucial lead for authorities to track him down. Mumbai Police had previously alleged that the contract to assassinate Siddique was given by Anmol Bishnoi, brother of the notorious gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, to Zeeshan Akhtar and another accused, Shubham Lonkar.

So far, police have arrested at least 25 individuals in connection with the case, highlighting the extensive nature of the investigation. The arrest of Akhtar in Canada is seen as a major step forward, as it could potentially unravel further layers of the conspiracy and provide critical insights into the planning and execution of the murder. Efforts are now focused on expediting Zeeshan Akhtar’s extradition to India to facilitate further interrogation and legal proceedings.
