Local police arrested a woman in Kerala for allegedly marrying several men fraudulently and for taking away their money, just before she was supposed to marry a panchayat member in Thiruvananthapuram district. Mere hours before their wedding, the groom found out about her deceit and the arrest was quickly arranged by the police on Saturday.
It was revealed by Aryanad police that the accused came to light when the groom realised some strange items in her bag that she was carrying during the ceremony preparations. After finding documents concerning previous marriages, he informed the law enforcement.
The person who filed the complaint, a panchayat member in Kerala, reported in his police statement that in May, he was contacted by a woman introducing herself as the mother of the bride. The caller then brought up a marriage proposal, which caused the accused to start getting in touch with him by phone and text. She identified herself as unmarried and adopted, saying that her mother wanted to wait to find her a groom. Her advice and explanation made the man decide to marry her, and the wedding date was set for that summer on June 6.
On the day of the wedding, he started suspecting more, which made him further investigate—and that’s how he found out about her former marriages. Also, he stated that he lost 7.5 lakhs through wedding expenses, and it appears to be another example of misuse of his money.
Police are trying to find out how many victims have been defrauded by the accused. Early indications show that the woman married as many as 7 to 8 men by using the same tricks. Officials are now looking for more victims and analysing her entire scheme.
