In a series of shocking acts of violence on Wednesday in north Bihar, a 27-year-old Indian Air Force (IAF) jawan and a local jewellery shop owner were both shot and robbed within a matter of hours, police said on Thursday. The government has affirmed that one of the suspects who participated in the attack on the IAF officers has been arrested, with the others being hunted down.

The IAF jawan, who was named Abhishek Singh, is on duty at Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh and was on his way to Muzaffarpur town at around 4 pm when they, with his wife, Kavita, was heading towards their home in Paru. Two motorcycle-riding men had tried to steal a gold chain belonging to Kavita, and the police nearly caught them, as Garima, the sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) of Saraiya, explained. After Singh opposed them, one of them shot him in the stomach at close range.

Kavita fearlessly took on the attackers and successfully held one of them down, screaming. The suspect arrested by the police was a Kardhanian resident. Police found a pistol and two cartridges at the scene, and raids are in progress to capture the rest of the suspects. Singh was operated on and is said to be out of danger.

Later that evening, in a separate incident, jewellery shop owner Abhimanyu Kumar alias Sonu was beaten up around 9 pm as he was leaving his shop in Vasudev Chowk in the Sitamarhi district and going towards the Minapur police station area in Muzaffarpur. Two attackers on motorcycles approached him to steal his bag with gold and silver ornaments, which were worth about 20 lakh. Abhimanyu was shot in the arm during the robbery, and the men ran away with his motorcycle and valuables.

The two victims are now undergoing treatment in two different hospitals within Muzaffarpur and are said to be stable.
