Dr. Namrata Chigurupati, the chief executive at the Omega Hospital in Hyderabad, was apprehended after allegations that she was caught in the act buying cocaine from a supplier’s representative. On 8th May, after receiving a tip-off, the police intercepted her vehicle outside a restaurant at Raidurgam and she was arrested for a drug transaction.

As police records show, Dr. Namrata brought in illicit drugs from a Mumbai-based supplier, known as Vansh Dhakkar, through a WhatsApp purchase. According to the allegation, she transferred ₹5 lakh to the supplier in a transfer on May 4 as part of the transaction. Dr. Namrata got the drugs from Balakrishna, the agent of Dhakkar, after meeting in her vehicle. Meanwhile, during the police raid, the officers recovered 53 grams of cocaine, ₹10000 in currency, and two mobile phones from the couple.

Senior police official Venkanna gave details of the arrest, saying, “Namrata, who was a medical practitioner, had placed an order for drugs from Vansh, whom she knew. Balakrishna was there to hand over the drugs and was caught when the exchange was made.”

Cases were filed against Dr. Namrata and Balakrishna for their involvement in committing a violation of the NDPS Act. Both have now been put in judicial custody.

According to reports, while under questioning, Dr. Namrata of Hyderabad reportedly claimed to be a long-term drug addict and that she had spent approximately ₹70 lakh on drugs since the addiction started. This has left the city’s medical authorities worried, as this has raised concerns over rampant drug use in the senior healthcare profession.

Investigators are now trying to trace the whole chain of individuals who supply and obtain the drugs. Through this case, it is shown how illegal drug operations are getting to the highest levels of society.
