A former convict among the armed men shot dead a 40-year-old gym owner on an alleged land-related dispute in Chandauli district of Uttar Pradesh, police said on Tuesday.
Arvind Yadav alias Bindu, who is a resident of Dihwa village within the limits of Alinagar police station, was attacked near his roadside gym in Dharna village late on Monday night. Police said that eight men came on five motorcycles at about 10 pm. They made a visit to the home of Arvind, looking over him, but they were informed by his brother Neeraj Yadav that he was present in the gym.
Neeraj was about to warn his brother, but when he reached, the attackers were at the door. The men summoned Arvind outside and engaged in a minor fight, after which they started shooting in his head, neck and shoulder, five times. When some local people heard gunshots, they rushed out, and the attackers had to rush away after shooting at the parked SUV of Arvind.
Right after Arvind was rushed to the trauma centre, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, where a doctor pronounced him dead on arrival.
Based on the complaint of Neeraj Yadav, the police took note of an FIR against five named accused, including ex-convict Kallu Yadav, Ram Lakhan, Amar Yadav, Babu Yadav, and Kaju Yadav, as well as three unidentified persons. One of the suspects has been taken into custody, but the police have refused to release his name.
As the probe showed, Arvind owned a clothes shop in Parmar Katra in Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Nagar and was also having land dealings; he had previously worked with the accused. He, however, drifted apart from them when they were imprisoned in another case. After they were released, the accused started to harass him for money, and the two used to quarrel frequently.
According to the police, they are hunting to capture the rest of the attackers as the investigation goes further.
